The Division of Critical Care Medicine (CCM) is the oldest division of the department that leads to sub-specialty boards. It was founded by Dr Niels Lund MD PhD FCCM in 1987, and has been instrumental in the introduction and development of Critical Care Medicine in the University and the city of Rochester. The Division is part of the multidisciplinary program in Critical Care Medicine. Its faculty and educational programs actively participate in the education and supervision of Fellows leading to sub-specialty boards in CCM in the departments of Anesthesiology, Surgery, Medicine and Pulmonary CCM.

Faculty

Peter J. Papadakos, M.D. FCCP, FCCM (serves as director of the division)

Dr. Papadakos is Professor of Anesthesiology, Surgery and Neurosurgery and has been with the program since 1988. He serves as a primary leader in the education of residents and fellows in CCM at the University of Rochester. He is a well-respected leader in the field of CCM and has served on the faculty of many national and international meetings and conferences. He has participated on a number of consensus conferences in the field, he also is an active reviewer and serves on the editorial board of a number of journals and newsletters. He has been visiting professor at a number of national and overseas universities. He has held or holds leadership roles in many national and international societies including the PGA, ASA, SCCM, ATS and ACCP. He has acted as a consultant for a number of government agencies including the NIH, FDA and the Swiss National Science Foundation.

The academic contributions of Dr Papadakos include an extensive list of book chapters, peer review papers, reviews and editorials. He has his own textbook co-edited by a former fellow Dr Apostolakos "Intensive Care Manual" with McGraw Hill and two books in preparation "Requisites of Critical Care" release date Fall 2004 and "Mechanical Ventilation Principals and Pathophysiology" release date Spring 2005 both with Elesivier Publishing.

Research interests include ARDS, mechanical ventilation, systemic inflammatory response and the sedation of critically ill patients. He has ongoing industry support of a number of clinical and basic science studies.

Joseph Dooley, M.D.

Dr. Dooley joined the division after completing his fellowship and holds the rank of Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Neurosurgery. He actively participates in the education of residents and fellows in CCM. He helped develop the core basic science program in CCM of the department of neurosurgery.

Dr. Dooley's academic interests are in coagulation and neuro-critical care he has written several book chapters and reviews. He has participated in clinical research in the Surgical ICU which has been industry supported He has also given presentations and lectures at national meetings. He leads the Department QA program.

Sanjeev Chhangani, M.D.

Dr. Chhangani is a former fellow of the program who returned after being co-director of the cardio-vascular ICU of Loyola University. He is director of the Surgical ICU at Rochester General Hospital. He is a major member of the division and actively participates in the educational mission of the Division. He gives many lectures and journal clubs to residents and fellows. He developed the program in critical care education for physician assistants for RIT.

Dr. Chhangani has contributed to the literature with several abstracts, papers and book chapters. He started the Rochester Trauma Group, which meets quarterly and provides a forum for CCM/Trauma in the city. He has spoken internationally and is active with several national and international societies with service on committees. He has started active research in his ICU and is site PI on several industry studies.

Stephen M. Luczycki, M.D.

Dr. Luczycki joined the division after his fellowship and is active in the education of fellows and residents in CCM. He participates in the practice of CCM at Rochester General and has several leadership roles there. His academic interests include sepsis and pneumonia. He has published a review on this topic. Dr. Luczycki has recently joined the faculty at Yale University.

Resident Education

The faculty actively participates in the education of anesthesiology residents. The have an active role in didactic lectures and bedside teaching. The division uses the textbook "Intensive Care Manual" as the base of written material. We also have a CD based program on the department web site and the 8-14 patient unit. Our residents ranked in the 89th percentile in CCM knowledge on their exam this year.

Research

The work of department in the field of CCM is widely published in the literature. The division has participated in over forty funded studies. We have mentored several generations of fellows and residents in CCM research. We are actively increasing our ability to do basic science research through collaboration with Erasmus University in Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

Goals

Continue to provide excellent CCM education to our residents, students and fellows. Continue to stimulate our residents to go on to Anesthesiology CCM training at the University of Rochester or other programs. Continue our leadership role in CCM education on the national and international level. Expand research in the division and department.
